We spent a day driving through small towns in this area looking for pubs which held traditional Irish music sessions. We’ve researched the local pubs for music sessions and got to one on Tuesday (sessions are like jam sessions where anyone who wants to can join in). Robert was in heaven. The music was at the Tower in the town of Elphin. A nice small, local pub. Everyone was very welcoming and suggested that Robert join in. Robert figured he wouldn’t get pulled in since keyboards are not usually part of this music.
Much to our surprise, a young woman came in with a keyboard and he got really nervous thinking he might get forced into it( he doesn’t really know this music and is trying to figure it out on this trip). Fortunately the young woman was very engrossed and not likely to give up her instrument. Apparently she and her friend had just come in third at the Wexford music competition. So we are hearing some of the best that Ireland has to offer!
When you go into these small pubs it’s like going to a party at someone’s house. You greet everyone and have chats as if you have known each other for years.
Here are a few photos of pubs and places in and around the towns of Elphin and Carrick-on-Shannon. Here are a few more photos of pubs etc. in the towns of Elphin and Carrick-on-Shannon. The last pub has a thatched roof.
This just in. An updated on the poppy plant at James and Evie’s house in Clonakilty.
