Tidbits of Clonakilty History and Timoleague Friary

Michael Collins (aka the big fella) is the hometown hero - a revolutionary who led the struggle for Irish independence. He is the handsome chap whose portrait is featured in the front-right of the mural behind the picnic table.

His home that was burned down by the British is a national monument.  They had a great view.

Yesterday the sun finally came through full force in the afternoon. We took advantage and headed off slightly east of here to Timoleague Friary.

The Friary was built by the Franciscan Friars in the 14th century.  While it originally had a small cemetery next to it, after it became ruins even the inside rooms became a cemetery. A very interesting idea.

It is located on a scenic inlet.

Along the roads we came across a number of old cars which look like fun. The woman typically wearing a scarf which was blowing in the wind.

We were told that until the 1960s the houses were a drab grey color, but some British hippies settled in and started painting their houses in bright colors. It caught on.

One evening we made a quick trip to the town of Cork to hear the daughter, Arin, play in a jam where Robert also participated. She’s the tall one in the middle with a guitar.

Above. Not sure what this mural in Cork is about but it was striking. He looks worried - maybe about housing since his head is a house?  Could be he has a headache.
